A Brief History

During the era of the Third Rajah, effort of the department was concentrated on building up a small staff and of the exploration and demarcation of forests suitable for reservation. The first reserve constituted was the Semenggoh forest reserve, 12 miles from Kuching, which was valuable research forest and arboretum.

Ever since, the department has constituted more than 5 million hectares of Permanent Forests (PFs) throughout the state.  However, the size of PFs underwent ups and downs due to revocation and excision to make way for land development and conservation.
