Palms

All palms are classified into the family Palmae. A total of 260 species from 31 genera have been identified in Sarawak.

Palms include rattans (106 species), small palms, Areca and Pinanga, to massive trees of Caryota, Salacca, Livistona, Oncosperma species and Nypa fruticans.

Many species are planted as roadside plants and ornamental trees while others have commercial value for furniture, basketry and mats. Some species produce edible shoots, fruits and starch.

Habitat: Most of the species are localized in particular habitats in all forest types, from mangrove to the summit of 2,600m above sea level.

Distribution: Throughout Sarawak but many species show high endemism to their habitats.
