Rhododendrons are an attractive group of plants with brightly coloured flowers. Fifty-one species have been collected from Sarawak. These consist of mainly epiphytes, small trees and shrubs. Leaves are arranged in pseudowhorls of 3-6. Flowers are white, yellow, orange to red, with or without scent. Habitat: Most of the species are found in sub-montane, mossy forest from 600m above sea level onwards. Two lowland epiphytic species are found on tree trunks along many rivers in Sarawak.
Distribution: Throughout Sarawak especially in sub-montane forest on the summit of most mountains. Many species are found in Mulu, Hose Mountain and Kelabit Highlands.
Note: Rhododendrons are threatened because of the colourful flowers which have high horticultural value.
All Rhododendron species are protected in Sarawak:
| Rhododendrons durionifolium | Rhododendron himantodes |
| Rhododendrons malayanum | Rhododendron rugosum |
