Bornean Horned Frog

(Megophrys nasuta) (Schlegel)

Description: A very stocky, medium-sized to large frog, with short, slender legs. The width of the head is half the head-plus-body length. The "horn" is very wide, pointed, triangular projection from the edge of the eyelid. Most individuals of this species also have a similiar pointed projection from the tip of the snout. The back has two pairs of long, narrow folds of skin. The colour is light clay to reddish brown, sometimes with one or two dark spots on the back. Usually there is a wide, dark bar on the side of the head below the eye.

Males: 70 - 105 mm

Females: 90 - 125 mm

Habits and habitat: This species appears to be the most widely distributed and common one in the genus. It lives in flat to steep rain forests, from near sea level to about 1600 meters. Adults breed at streams having weak to moderate currents. Tadpoles live in riffles, and are frequently found hiding where roots mats of bank vegetation trail in the water.

Distribution: Found throughout Borneo. It also occurs in Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia.

Call: A single, loud honk. This sharp, multi-toned note is emitted at intervals.
