The Botanical Research Centre (BRC)
The Botanical Research Centre (BRC)
The development of the BRC began in 1976 and is sited in the Semengoh Forest Reserve which was constituted in 1920. The Centre provides a comprehensive collection of living plants collected from all regions of Sarawak for ex-situ conservation of the genetic resources. Its proximity to the Semengoh Arborteum gives it an advantage to fulfill this purpose. It also functions as a research and educational centre in tropical botany for scientists, students and the public.
To date, a glasshouse, nurseries and 7 specialized gardens have been established in an area of 22 hectares. The gardens are:
- Mixed Planting Garden
- Ethnobotanical Garden
- Wild Orchid Garden
- Wild Fruit Garden
- Fernarium
- Bamboo and Ficus Garden
- Rheophyte Garden
The BRC is about 20 km from Kuching city and can be reached by public transport or taxi. Visitors must obtain permission from the Senior Assistant Director (Research) at Forest Research Centre, prior to their visit.
