Slow Loris (Nycticebus coucang)
Family: LORISIDAELorises are small, stockily built primates with a very short tail, and unlike most other members of their Order, they climb slowly and deliberately, never jumping under normal circumstances. All the digits have nails, with the exception of the second digit of the foot, which has a short claw.
Measurements: HB 199-275, T 13-25, HF 48-63 (5 specimens). Wt 230-610 kg.
Identification: General coloration varies from pale grey-brown to reddish-brown, with a brown stripe from top of head to middle of back or base of tail. Usually has a dark-coloured ring around each eye. Fur soft and dense. Eyes reflect torchlight clearly at night with a reddish colour.
Ecology & Habitat: Nocturnal and usually arboreal, mostly in small to medium-sized trees. Feeds on small animals, mostly insects, and on pulpy fruits, including cocoa. Occurs in tall and secondary forests, gardens and cocoa plantations. Mainly solitary.
Distribution: Borneo - Nycticebus coucang borneanus known from many lowland and hill localities throughout the area. Highest record above 1300 m on Gunung Kinabalu.
