Collared Mongoose (Herpestes semitorquatus)
Family: VIVERRIDAE
Measurements. HB 400-455, T 258-303 (over 60% of HB), HF 82-93 (4 specimens).
Identification. Reddish-brown, with fine yellow markings on the back. Lower parts of legs blackish-brown. Underside of head and neck distinctly yellowish.
Similar species: the Short-tailed Mongoose, H. brachyurus, has a shorter tail, is darker coloured and lacks the yellowish neck coloration.
Ecology and Habitat. Mainly terrestrial. Diurnal and probably also nocturnal. Diet includes small animals. Occurs in tall and secondary forests, mixed tree plantations and partially cultivated areas.
Distribution H.s. semitorquatus. Recorded from scattered localities in the lowlands and hills, including most parts of Sarawak (up to 1200 m on G. Dulit).
Hose's Mongoose (Herpestes hosei)
Measurements. Skull: gl 83, width 46.
Identification. Known from only one (adult female) specimen. Similar to the Short-tailed Mongoose, H. brachyurus, but hair shorter and more reddish-brown; claws straighter and more slender; skull smaller with a less rounded coronoid process on the lower jaw.
Distribution. Only known specimen collected in the Baram district, Sarawak, in 1893.
