Ferns

A total of 757 species from 136 genera in 35 families of ferns were identified in Sarawak. Ferns are part of a group of plants known as Pteridophyta. Many species are epiphytic on tree branches and tree trunks. Terrestrial ferns are also common with Cyathea, the tree fern, as the most distinctive on higher elevation. Many species are edible, midin (Stenochlaena palustris) being one of the popular dishes in restaurants.

Some species are known to have medicinal value, one of which is Blechnum orientale used for treating boils. Others are planted as ornamentals.

Habitat:
In all forest types, roadsides and open spaces.
Distribution: Throughout Sarawak. Many species are site-specific.
