Current Update On Industrial Tree Plantation
CURRENT UPDATE ON INDUSTRIAL TREE PLANTATION (ITP):
PLANTING ACHIEVEMENT AND PRODUCTION
PLANTING ACHIEVEMENT AND PRODUCTION
The Industrial Tree Plantation (ITP) programme in Sarawak supports the development of planted forests, sustainable timber production and the growth of downstream timber industries. The following statistics summarise LPF development, planting achievement by rotation, species distribution, and overall log production and revenue based on their respective reporting periods.
1. LPF Development Overview
As at 1 September 2026, Sarawak's Licensed Planted Forests (LPF) programme covers a total gross area of 1,886,265 hectares, of which 965,311 hectares are plantable areas.
| Indicator | Achievement |
| Total number of LPF licences | 51 |
| Total gross area | 1,886,265 ha |
| Total plantable area | 965,311 ha |
2. Planting Achievement by Rotation
Based on the Half-Yearly Report (HYR) ending June 2026, planting activities have been undertaken through three successive rotations. Rotation 1 (R1) involves initial planting on fresh or newly developed plantable areas, while Rotations 2 (R2) and 3 (R3) involve replanting areas harvested from previous rotations.
| Rotation | Planting period | Planted area (ha) | Description |
| R1 | 1997–2026 | 625,088.80 | Initial planting on fresh or newly developed areas |
| R2 | 2013–2026 | 96,237.35 | Replanting following harvesting of R1 areas |
| R3 | 2020–2026 | 8,997.12 | Replanting following harvesting of R2 areas |
| Total | 730,323.27 | Cumulative planted area across all rotations |
3. R1 Achievement Against the State Target
R1 contributes to the State's target of establishing one million hectares of planted forests. As at June 2026, the cumulative planted area under R1 reached 625,088.80 hectares, representing approximately 63% of the target.
| Indicator | Achievement |
| State planted forest target | 1,000,000 ha |
| R1 planted area | 625,088.80 ha |
| Target achievement | 62.51% (approximately 63%) |
| Remaining area to achieve target | 374,911.20 ha |
The target achievement is calculated based on R1 only. R2 and R3 are reported separately as subsequent replanting cycles and are not included in the one-million-hectare target calculation.
4. Planting Progress by Species Under R1
As at June 2026, Acacia accounted for the largest share of the planted area under R1, followed by Batai and Eucalyptus.
| Species | Planted area (ha) | Share of R1 |
| Acacia | 336,011.01 | 53.8% |
| Batai | 109,251.85 | 17.5% |
| Eucalyptus | 108,177.85 | 17.3% |
| Kelampayan | 35,314.24 | 5.6% |
| Other species | 36,333.85 | 5.8% |
| Total | 625,088.80 | 100% |
5. Overall Log Production and Revenue
For the period from 2011 to September 2026, cumulative log production amounted to 14,952,247.94 cubic metres, while total revenue generated amounted to RM157,031,856.62.
| Indicator | Cumulative figure |
| Log production | 14,952,247.94 m³ |
| Total revenue generated | RM157,031,856.62 |
These figures represent overall reported production and revenue and are not disaggregated by planting rotation. Therefore, they should be presented separately from the rotation-specific planting achievement figures.
6. Overall Assessment
The ITP programme has achieved 62.51% of the State's one-million-hectare planted forest target under R1 as at June 2026, with 374,911.20 hectares remaining to meet the target. Acacia remains the dominant species under R1, accounting for 53.8% of its planted area. Meanwhile, R2 and R3 support the continuation of plantation development through successive replanting cycles. Overall log production and revenue provide additional indicators of the programme's contribution to timber supply and the forestry industry.
The continued development of industrial tree plantations supports sustainable forest management, strengthens the timber supply chain and contributes to the objectives of the Post-COVID Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
